So now that you (or I) have a Wii, it's time to
get all the accessories. I've taken a look at a couple of
different things for the Wii, and here's what I think of them.
FUNKOMETER RATING: 5
First thing I'm going to review is the
Psyclone Chill Station. This little gadget is meant to help
keep your Wii cool, and I mean temperature wise and looks wise.
The chill station has a blue LED light that goes around the base of the
station which gives it a nice glow. The base of the station also
has a small fan that blows air up at the Wii to keep it cool. I
don't really know how well the fan works since I never really had a
problem with the Wii getting hot. The chill station plugs into a
USB port to draw power for the light and fan and stays on when the Wii
is in standby mode. If you don't want to have it on you can turn
it off with a switch on the back. There's a couple of attachments
for either side that will hold 2 Wii remotes and 2 nunchuks. Over
all the chill station is pretty cool but not really a must have
accessory.
FUNKOMETER RATING: 3
Next up is the
Nyko Charge Station.
This bad boy replaces your Wii remote batteries with a NiMH battery pack
and has a stand that you put the remote on to charge it. In order to use
the stand and battery pack, you have to replace the standard
battery cover with one that Nyko provides that has a rubber grip and a
hole that exposes contacts for charging (I guess if you're really
adventurous you could cut holes in the standard cover). This thing
is a pretty good money saver, since you won't have to buy replacement
batteries for your Wii for a while (eventually the batteries will wear
down and won't take a charge anymore). You could achieve the same
results with some rechargeable "AA" size batteries, but where's the
coolness in that? Over all the charge station is nice to
have but not really that much greater than just having rechargeable "AA"
size batteries.
FUNKOMETER RATING: 5
Finally I took a look at a couple of different
"gloves" for the Wii Remotes. I picked up a couple of different
brands. I looked at the Nintendo "switch and carry" glove, the Mad
Catz glove, and GameStop's cover. The all do the same thing, but
the Nintendo one feels the best. The one from GameStop ripped on
me when I was putting it back on one time, so the quality on those isn't
quite as good. In order to replace the battery you pretty much
have to take the "gloves" off. Also if you have the Nyko charger
you have to take the "gloves" off in order to charge the remote, so
they're kind of a pain when you're low on power.
The end result: The chill station has a "wow" factor
but isn't really needed. The Nyko charge station is really
practical, but the same thing can be done with "AA" size rechargeable
batteries. The Wii remote gloves give a nice grip, but are a pain
when you have replace/charge batteries.
